Turf Recovery After Fungal Stress

The Challenge

Landscaping in hot, arid environments creates substantial long-term irrigation demand, particularly for turf and ornamental plants.

At RDI’s Al-Khatim facility in Abu Dhabi, the objective was to evaluate RDI’s effectiveness for landscaping in desert urban environments.

The Solution

A three-month turf deployment evaluated RDI under different installation configurations:

  • Installation depths of 10cm, 15cm and 20cm
  • Constant operating pressure of ~1.5 psi
  • Water consumption and performance observed across a range of temperatures

The Outcome

Monthly water consumption declined by up to 87%. Vegetation remained established as temperatures increased through the three-month trial. Turf affected by fungal disease visibly recovered by Week 11, providing additional evidence of resilience under real operating conditions.

The Takeaway

For municipalities, developers, resorts, parks and large landscape operators, subsurface plant-responsive irrigation could materially reduce ongoing irrigation demand while supporting healthy vegetation under desert conditions.
